Valentine's Day
We love Valentine's Day at Salem Pre School. Our beautifully decorated bags stand in the hallway on party day waiting to collect the cards our friends will bring to us. Party day gives us a chance to wear those cute headbands with bouncy hearts on top or our teeshirts with red and pink Valentines. Games, stories about love and kindness, special snacks and music make our day at school a special one.

PLAY IS WORK
It has been said that a child's play is his work. We see this all the time at Pre School and it is the reason we encourage the children to take part in the games, puzzles, art and music at school. These two pictures are sweet examples of the way fun can equal work (learning.)

FEBRUARY FUN
SALEM PRE SCHOOL NEWS, FEB. 2013
February is such a busy month I don’t know where to begin. Valentine’s Day comes mid month but it takes us the first two weeks of February to prepare for it. We have to learn about the mail carrier and the post office first. Then we make lovely Valentine projects for our “loved ones.” One of our art projects gets mailed to ourselves so we can prove that the post office really works!
With Presidents’ Day celebrated on the 18th, Lincoln’s birthday on the 12th and Washington’s birthday on the 22nd, this is the best time of the year to learn a little about our country. We’ll examine our flag and other important symbols of our country. Facts about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama are good to know. How many states are there in the United States and which state do we live in? These many sound like easy facts but we start here and build on them as we go.
On February 21st the three year old classes, known as the Orange and Green Classes, present an evening program for friends and family. They will be singing some favorite songs and doing some of their musical activities and finger plays. There is nothing cuter then these three year olds! Anyone interested is invited to come along. The program starts at 7:00 p.m.
Parent-Teacher Conferences fill most of the last week of February. We teachers enjoy having this chance to visit with parents and evaluate the year. Thursday and Friday of that week are not so serious. These are our PAJAMA DAYS!! Everyone waits all year for these fun times. Of course, we all wear our pajamas to school. It’s the Pre School version of casual Friday. We read stories with our blankies and bedtime pals and we feast on cereal and juice at snack time. It’s a grand way to end the month!

CHRISTMAS STORY
Happy birthday Baby Jesus! The story of Jesus' birth is the central theme of our Christmas unit. Through songs and stories the children have heard the story of Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem and, after finding no room in the inn, staying in the stable where Mary gave birth to Jesus. The animals, the shepherds, the angels and the wisemen came to see the baby. The star shown brightly over the stable pointing to where the baby lay. This week our classes have been acting out the story, complete with costumes and props! We realize that Joseph did not ride a bike to Bethlehem. However, this Joseph loved to ride a bike after the enactment :)

THANKSGIVING FEAST
Although the Pilgrims didn't have pizza for their Thanksgiving Feast like we did we do have something in common with them, we are all thankful for our homes, families, friends and the world around us. Pretending to be Pilgrims and turkeys we sat together and enjoyed pizza, carrots and vanilla wafers at school! Yum!

SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM
Practice, practice, practice! We chose our favorite songs and music activities to share in our Fall Program presented by the four/five year old classes on Thursday evening, November, 15. Family members, grandparents, great grandparents, friends and neighbors came to see our students sing, play their instruments and dance to the best music around. The audience loved the disco dance with music by Go Fish! Everyone in attendance enjoyed the slideshow that concluded the evening. Candid shots from our fall days at school gave a glimpse into what pre school is all about! The refreshment time after the performance provided a opportunity to socialize with other families and the teachers. We want to thank everyone who came to support our students!!
